Indoor Air Quality
If you are typical, you spend 90% of your life indoors - at home, in the work place, shopping, etc. Energy conservation concerns over the last 20 years have led to tighter, better-insulated, climate controlled indoor environments. With these more energy efficient structures have come the perception that the indoor environment is healthier because polluted outside air is sealed out. Wrong! According to the EPA, whether you live or work in a smog-choked urban environment or enjoy the open spaces of rural living, indoor air has been found to be up to 70 times more polluted than the air outside.
Many of these air borne particles come from man-made materials used in furniture and upholstery, draperies, bedding, carpets, clothing paints, and cleaners. They also come from cooking, smoking, pets, candles, and fireplaces. Even some houseplants can produce pollutants.
There are approximately 20 million particles in every cubic meter of air and all are a barrier to a truly healthy and clean environment. These small particles pass through most filters and remain airborne or settle onto surfaces. The problem is removing these particles from the environment.
Most filters used in the home today only take out 90% or more of the particles greater than 10 microns. Below 10 microns, the results are minimal.
Operation
Fuller UV offers a highly efficient, non-ionizing, electronically enhanced media filter that utilizes the concept of dielectric polarization to effectively remove sub-micron particulate.
The concept of dielectric polarized media filtration, is effected through the use of a steady-state electrostatic force field acting on a dielectric media such as our special blended network of polywool fibers.
The ESF Electronic Air Cleaner, utilizing an input of 24 volts AC, generates a 7,000 volt positive DC charge from its proprietary solid state power head. This charge, applied to the central grid, polarizes the ½' thick polywool blended collector pads on either side of the grid. These pads are held in place by the two outer screens, which are grounded. Therefore, the ESF Electronic Air Cleaner is really two filters in one due to the symmetry about the central grid.
An electrostatic field, when imposed on a bed of our polywool fibers causes each fiber to be polarized, i.e., to cause a charge shift within the fiber. This results in each fiber being positive and negative on opposite sides of each fiber, in the direction of the high positive electrostatic field. Simply stated, we are creating millions of tiny powerful magnets to attract and hold air particles. Furthermore, particles entering the electrostatic field become polarized also, which means that they have a spatial varying charge distribution. They are attracted, with a force proportional to the square of the average hemispheric charge density, by the alternate polarized side of each collecting fiber. The use of a static electrostatic field (i.e., one without current flow and corona discharge) is important, since it prevents arcing and any generation of undesirable ozone.
In addition to the application of electrostatic polarization, the ESF employs the principles of impingement and agglomeration. Impingement is the process that all media filters use to trap large air particles. These large particles build up on the front of the filter, while the smaller particles are collected through the media pads. Agglomeration of particles takes place as the all the particles having been polarized, collect together into larger particle that are collected on the charged media fibers.
Testing
Air filter manufacturers have their products independently tested in order to validate claims of performance. Industry wide, the ASHRAE Test Standard is the method of choice for most types of air filters.
The ASHRAE test standards are not specifically designed for any one type of air cleaning device, but at the same time, do not entirely address the variety of air filtering devices and the multitude of applications in which they are used. Filters are designed to capture and hold larger airborne particulate. These tests are designed to measure the total amount of dust holding capacity for a given filter.
Increasingly sophisticated, knowledgeable and informed consumers look for test data so they can make the best possible choice for their filtration requirements. Unlike the standard ASHRAE tests performed on standard disposable filters for arrestence, we conducted efficiency tests for the removal of sub-micron particulate. It is a given that if you can remove the sub-micron particulate, the larger particulate is not a challenge.
The testing was performed in a 1,008 cubic foot test chamber utilizing laser particle counters to measure the total number of particles by size. Three separate tests were performed using pollen, dust, and cigarette smoke.
The following reports summarizes by particle size the total number of particles counted in a cubic centimeter. The tests, which lasted from ten to twenty minutes, show the dramatic reduction in total particles as they are counted at the start of the test and every two minutes thereafter. After only twenty minutes, the equivalent of two air exchanges, the "ESF" removed over 45% of particles in the (0.09 to 0.5 range) and over 77% of the particles in the (.5 to 1.0) micron range. The heating/cooling systems in most homes normally provide for at least five air exchanges per hour.
This testing clearly demonstrates the high efficiency of the ESF Electronic Air Cleaner and what it may do for you in your home.
Benefits
The ESF Electronic Air Cleaner, a whole house air cleaner currently available in thirty-five standard sizes, is designed to easily replace an existing filter in a homes forced air heating or A/C system.
Benefits of the ESF Air Cleaner:
Portable Console Unit
|
Our free standing portable console unit, containing the ESF air cleaner, makes it the best product on the market today. It has the ability to remove a high percentage of air particulate while consuming less than 70 watts of power with a noise level of less than 60db. Weighing only twenty-two pounds, the advanced design of the ESF allows it to be wall mounted or conveniently located on the floor or any table area. The console unit with its high efficient three speed fan, available in a rich charcoal finish, comes standard with a remote control along with its manual touch pad control with timer. A high output ionizer, controlled by a separate switch, is available for those who want the added benefits of negatively ions in the air. In addition, an optional activated carbon filter may be added at any time for the control of gaseous odors. |
