The Major Series
|
Major Ultraviolet Fixtures are designed for airborne
disinfection and product protection in commercial and industrial
applications. The units can be mounted flush on the ceiling or
suspended with a chain. One particular area where the Majors are quite
useful is walk-in refrigerators and holding rooms. Majors are installed
in refrigerators to irradiate, directly, as much of the air in the room
as possible. Lamps located on the ceiling will usually provide uniform
overall irradiation and, at the same time, protect personnel from high
intensities of ultraviolet at eye level and reduce the possibility of
lamp breakage. Where ceilings are higher than 12 feet and meat rails
are used, it is recommended that the lamps be located between and
approximately one foot above the rails. The cold cathode lamp is
recommended for refrigerator applications.
The ultraviolet lamps will reduce mold spores and bacteria in the room
and thus aid in preserving meat and other food products. Ultraviolet
rays that directly irradiate meat surfaces will reduce contamination.

Another popular application for the Major is in food processing, in most manufacturing processes, conveyors move product from one station to another. Depending on the length of the runs between stations can determine how sanitary the product will remain before packaging. Other factors, such as quality control and indoor environment also determines how long a product will retain freshness after packaging. Direct irradiation is ideal for conveyor lines to effectively remove unwanted bacteria.
There is no such thing as a germ free manufacturing facility, but with Majors installed, shelf life can be extended. Use of Major UV fixtures is a definite enhancement of sanitary quality control. Proper design and placement are an important feature of such systems.

Packaging Line Equipment
Beverages and similar fluids are commonly packaged in bottles, cans or cartons for easy distribution to consumers. Such containers are commonly delivered empty along a conveyor line to a device which affixes a cap, crown, crimp or other closing device to the container. While it is highly desirable that these containers be sterile at the time they reach the filling device, such sterility is commonly lacking.
In the case of reusable bottles, which are washed between uses, most often they are washed in hot caustic solutions which cleanse and sterilize the containers. However, the caustic solution must be rinsed from the bottles, and the water used for this purpose may be of potable quality but not necessarily sterile. The rinsing water can contain living micro organisms, which can spoil the liquid in the container.
Beer, milk, vegetable and fruit juices all contain nutrients capable of supporting microbial growth under such non sterile conditions. New bottles or containers are seldom subjected to effective sterilizing conditions immdediately prior to filling. While glass and synthetic plastic bottles are formed from hot melts, which would insure sterility at the instant they leave the mold, from that point they are subjected to annealing and/or cooling currents and are conveyed through possibly dusty areas. Then, they are packed into shipping containers and subsequently shipped under conditions that are substantially less than sterile.
Metal cans are formed in equipment which must be lubricated with coolants notorious for their high bacteria counts. This coolant is re-used and flushed away in a stream of water. While the rinse water is often sterile, it has no residual sterilizing effect on any bacteria present in the package. Paper cartons and other similar containers are similarly lacking in the inherent sterility often required in the quality packaging of most beverages or other product fill.

Upper Air Disinfection
The Aristocrat uses germicidal ultraviolet light to disinfect the upper room air. This unit is designed in that all of the ultraviolet energy is above the 6 1/2' level, that is, in the upper air strata of the room. Normal air circulation distributes the disinfected air throughout the room. The air constantly moves up and down in random patterns caused by heating, ventilation, and movement of people in the room. Disturbance of air in this manner allows upper air in the zone to be irradiated by the ultraviolet light. It is displaced downward thus diluting the germ concentration at the lower levels.
This protection in the upper air is concentrated in an 8 to 10 degree cone with a maximum peak of 10 degrees above the horizontal. The design is specific to ensure that the UVC rays are not directly accessible to personnel.
The Aristocrat units are constructed of stainless steel or aluminum. They are wall mounted at a height of 6'-6" to 7'-0" above the floor. Customized dimensions available upon request.
